BHSFS is held on beautiful Thompson Island in Boston Harbor.  It’s a short ferry ride from downtown Boston, Massachusetts, and is part of the 33-island Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area.

Our home on the island is the Thompson Island Conference Center, which is owned and operated by Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center.  The Conference Center’s facilities include dorms, classrooms, dining hall/kitchen, auditorium and gym.  Outward Bound operates youth adventure programs on the island, as well as corporate outings and team-building events.  In addition to our classes and activities at BHSFS, fiddle campers are invited to explore the island and use its gym, athletic fields and sports equipment.  The island also offers a swimming beach, hiking trails and gorgeous views.

Boston Harbor Scottish Fiddle School is a residential camp for all ages, all instruments, and all levels, with emphasis on traditional Scottish tunes for fiddle.  Fees include 7 nights in comfortable dorm rooms, all meals, music instruction, parties, concerts, ferry service to Thompson Island, and limitless Scottish musical enjoyment.  In addition to fiddle classes on six levels, piano and at least one other instrument (pipes and guitar in 2012), we offer electives, parties, jam sessions, dancing for all with sit-in bands, and our celebrated Visitors’ Day.  Evening parties during the week feature a New England clambake, a band night with themed costume party, a very entertaining ceilidh where campers can show off their talents, and our annual fundraising auction, which provides scholarships and other funding for BHSFS.

Boston Harbor Scottish Fiddle School is a program of the Folk Arts Center of New England, Inc.  The Folk Arts Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting interest and participation in the traditional dance, music, and related folk arts of many cultures, and to supporting other groups and individuals with the same mission.  The Folk Arts Center has over 500 members and in addition is supported by grants, including a prestigious Massachusetts Cultural Council grant.  More information is available at www.facone.org.  The Folk Arts Center’s retail music shop, The Little Shop of Horas, will be at BHSFS and will offer CDs by our teachers and lots of other traditional music, as well as books, sheet music, T-shirts, tote bags, and other gift items.  Our teachers will record a CD of BHSFS tunes, which will  be offered through the shop after camp.
